I WANT TO CAPTAIN ENGLAND AGAIN - BECKHAM
Tuesday, June 17, 2008

David Beckham has admitted he would love to captain England on a permanent basis again.

Beckham, who stepped down as captain after the 2006 World Cup, led his country for the friendly win against Trinidad and Tobago earlier this month.

The LA Galaxy midfielder became England coach Fabio Capello's fourth skipper in four matches as the Italian searches for right man to wear the armband in next season's World Cup qualifiers.

Beckham knows John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard all have strong claims to be captain as well, but he insisted he would never turn down the honour if Capello offered it.

“I would never turn the captaincy down. But I do think I was lucky to captain my country 59 times,” Beckham told Sky Sports News.

“It was one of my biggest, if not the biggest, personal honour to lead out my country.

“I am older and one of the more experienced players and of course if it was handed to me at any point I would never turn it down. But there are a lot of candidates that are ready for it now.

“We are very lucky because we have players in our team that are leaders and captains, like Stevie G, JT and Rio. So whoever the manager picks I am sure that player will lead by example.

“I think he knows how much the captain's armband means to a player. He has enough experience to know how much it means to this country.”
