KATIE MEETS BECKS

Katie and Becks...
Monday 17th November 2003 is the day that I will always remember.

It was the day that I met my hero, David Beckham. It had always been a dream of mine to meet David Beckham.

I have been a massive fan of his ever since he started out at Man United.

On Wednesday my Mum was flicking through the channels on the radio and just by chance she had the radio on LBC.

I don’t usually listen to LBC and I was lucky I heard about the competition. They said there would be a competition to meet Becks the next day and there would be a hundred winners.

I wanted to win it so badly. I enter every single competition to meet David Beckham but had never won. I listened on Thursday and they said that the first one hundred to text in would win the chance to meet David Beckham at a secret location in London.

"I enter every single competition to meet David Beckham but had never won."

My hands were shaking as I held my mobile.

I’m sure that my first text was the first to be received. I kept on texting in so much that I think most of the hundred texts were from me! Then later that evening they called back but I was downstairs and I couldn’t reach my phone even though I ran as fast as I could.

I was devastated. As I listened to the message on my voicemail ‘I’m sorry you have missed your chance’ I just started crying uncontrollably.

I was devastated, angry at myself. Why did I have to go downstairs? I thought I had blown my chance.

This was even worse than not winning at all. Minutes later I was still distraught and in tears and they called again and took my details.

The next moment I was jumping up and down. I was so happy, excited and I couldn’t stop smiling. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I was going to meet David Beckham. They said the tickets would arrive before Monday.

When they didn’t arrive in the post on Saturday morning I spent several hours worrying that they might not arrive. I really couldn’t concentrate on anything. All I could think about was David Beckham even more than usual.

The tickets arrived later that day and I was so relieved. I had several sleepless nights before the big day. Then Monday finally came.

As I listened to the message on my voicemail ‘I’m sorry you have missed your chance.'

Can't bear to leave...
Meeting Becks
I was fine at the weekend and I was feeling pretty calm and confident that it would go well and I had it all planned out.

But on Monday I started worrying about everything. In a few hours I was going to meet the man David Beckham.

I thought I’d be so nervous that I wouldn’t be able to get my words out. I wanted it to be perfect. We arrived quite early at Waterstones, Piccadilly in London so we were towards the front of the queue. There were hundreds of people.

We were sent up to a room on the sixth floor. Looking around there were elderly women and men, mums with their little boys but no teenage girls apart from myself. They said that David was not allowed to sign any other merchandise apart from David Beckham: My Side but I took along his other 2 books and some posters.

At least I could try to get him to sign other stuff. The wait was 3 hours but it was worth it as I got to see my hero.

As the queue started moving and we got nearer and nearer I became even more excited, nervous, anxious and emotional.

I stood up on a chair to see Becks. There he was in the same room as me! I really couldn’t believe he was just sitting over there.

I must have nearly fallen off the chair! I got my present and my letter ready and managed to sneak it past the Waterstones staff who were checking you every few steps. I was next. My heart was beating so fast.

I knew this was my moment with Becks. I wanted it to be perfect. This was the moment that I had been dreaming about for most of my life.

He was standing right in front of me. I could feel the tears welling up. I was so overcome with emotion – happiness that I was meeting Beckham that I was about to cry. I think I just about managed to hold myself together for the photos.

This was the moment that I had been dreaming about for most of my life.

Love from David
David was looking even more gorgeous than in the pictures. It was literally one after the other and because of time everyone was only allowed a few seconds with him.

I made the most of it though. He had his hair down and was wearing a black jacket and grey trousers. He said ‘Hi’ and flashed that sexy smile of his at me. I just melted. I said to him ‘Hi David! I love you! I’m your biggest fan!’

Then I gave him my present and my letter. I said ‘I’ve got you a present and written you a letter.’ David said ‘Aww that’s nice, thankyou!’

I was the only one to get him a present and write him a letter.

The present was a Parker pen which I personalised ‘David Beckham World’s Best Footballer’ ‘Love from your biggest fan Katie Lin.’

I wanted it to be something special, something that would mean a lot to him and something that he would remember me by.

I hope David likes it and uses it. He signed my book ‘love’ which was really sweet! He wrote ‘love’! I had my picture taken with him but was not allowed to go across the table. Our heads got really close when the picture was taken!

I had planned to stick my details in his pocket but I couldn’t because his jacket pocket was not open. Then they made me leave but I came back for more. I asked David ‘Can you sign my shirt please?’ and this evil woman said ‘only little kids.’

Why should it be one rule for one and another rule for another?

I mean, I’m still a kid right? And I was his biggest fan there by far. But David being David was really sweet and wanted to sign my Man United shirt for me.

He signed it right on the 7. Then I shook his hand! His hands felt really warm and I held on as long as possible before they made me let go.

I have touched the man himself! He smelt really nice too. It was heaven. I thought I was dreaming but it was real. It was actually happening. David was right in front of me and I was speaking to him! I said ‘Thankyou, Thankyou so much’ and tried to go back a second time but this time they barred me.

I was the only one to get him a present and write him a letter.

Unforgettable Experience
I couldn’t believe what had just happened to me.

I was in a daze. I was unable to speak for moments after that.

I wanted to go back and stay with my idol, David Beckham forever but the Waterstones employees wouldn’t let me.

I have replayed that special moment when I met Becks in my mind for countless number of times ever since. He was such a nice, a lovely guy and really sweet.

Becks was even more gorgeous in real life. I loved every millisecond of it and I will remember it forever. It was truly the best day of my life.

Meeting David Beckham has only made me love David even more than I did before, if that’s possible and it has made me even more determined to meet him again for longer and to have him to myself.

I left my phone number and address on the letter and I hope he does reply if he has time and it would be nice if Becks can visit this website.

David if you’re reading this, this is for you: You’ve made me so happy. Meeting you was the best moment in my life and I love you forever. You’re the best.
